Stomach Cancer Statistics
The American Cancer Society released a publication that showed this year’s stomach cancer statistics. Similar statistics were released by the National Cancer Institute, Cancer Facts & Figures 2010, and the SEER database. All of these organizations summed up that by the end of 2011, near to 21,730 adults, 12,730 males and 8270 females, are going to be diagnosed with various stages of stomach cancer. The statistics report that there will be approximately 10,570 fatal cases this year; 6,350 will be men, and 4,220 women.
Stomach cancer occurrence varies by location, as food is one of the major causes of this disease. Not only the wrong diet can cause this disease, but also traditional foods which people don’t think are really bad for their health. As if to make a point, large numbers of stomach cancer occurrences are found in China and the rest of East Asia, because of the traditional, exotic foods that they are accustomed to.
The occurrences of cancer in the US and the Western part of the world are constantly receding over the years, but the number of deaths is no less staggering. As stated above, 10,570 people will succumb to cancer this year. Most of them have been cancer patients for the past five years or so. Even then, the health authorities are thankful that the problem is at least starting to improve. According to health authorities, the Western world owes it to the continuous efforts to fight off stomach cancer and their diligence in keeping a healthy diet.
Studies that come with many stomach cancer statistics have always suggested that a healthy diet is the best way to fight off stomach cancer. There are treatments like chemotherapy and radiation therapy, even surgery, but the success rate of are well below 30%. Studies suggest that the body’s immunity system is still a person’s best defense against cancer. In this case, where cancer is in the stomach, keeping a healthy diet is even more likely to help prevent cancer. The same studies tell people that greater than five servings of vegetable per day, together with 10 to 20 minutes of exercise, and living a happy stress-free life are the best defenses against stomach cancer.
Very recent stomach cancer statistics show that the 5-year survival rate is rather low at 26%. This survival rate includes those who survive with stomach cancer for at least 5 years, but excludes those with stomach cancer who die because of other diseases.
