Esophageal Cancer Prevention
Esophageal Cancer Prevention simply refers to the action of reducing the risk of one getting the cancer. When one has gotten the Esophageal Cancer, there are several treatment options available but many of these do not offer 100% guarantee of cure. This means that the more logical thing to do is to safeguard oneself from getting the Esophageal Cancer all together. There are certain things that one must bear in mind if they are to prevent this cancer from attacking them.
To avoid new cancer cases from showing up, scientists usually look at the risk factors along with the protective factors. If anything puts you at risk of catching the cancer, it is known as a risk factor. On the other hand, anything that reduces your risk of getting the cancer is known as a protective factor. There are some risk factors that can be avoided while others cannot be avoided. Generally speaking, the three methods of Esophageal Cancer Prevention include lifestyle changes, avoiding the causes of the cancer and taking preventive medication.
Among the lifestyle changes, there are several risk factors that should be avoided. Smoking and excessive consumption of alcohol are top on the list of lifestyle issues that need to be looked at. People who smoke or consume too much alcohol usually put themselves in danger of developing esophageal cancer because smoking and drinking are responsible for at least 90% of all the esophegeal squamous cell carcinomas. Tobacco smoking in particular has a connection with esophegeal adenocarcinoma and should therefore be avoided.
Esophageal Cancer Prevention can be done well through proper dieting. Just like most diseases, Esophageal Cancer development has a bearing on diet. Therefore if one’s diet is insufficient in the important preventive substances for esophageal cancer, then they are at risk of developing the cancer. A diet that is high in yellow and green fruits alongside vegetables will greatly lower one’s risk of developing this l cancer. Cruciferous vegetables are particularly important especially broccoli, Cabbage and cauliflower.
Another way of preventing the development of esophageal cancer is the use of certain drugs. There are studies that have brought to light the fact that using nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) could reduce one’s chances of developing esophageal cancer. Some nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs include aspirin as well as other drugs that will reduce pain and swelling. It is however important to note that using these drugs may increase one’s chances of getting a heart attack along with a host of other problems like kidney damage, bleeding in the stomach, heart failure and bleeding in the intestines.
Radiofrequency ablation is another method of Esophageal Cancer Prevention which is still being studied as a possible solution. Radiofrequency ablation makes the use of radio waves to go about the heating and destroying of the abnormal cells. It is these cells that could later on become cancer therefore destroying them earlier on would mean that there is no risk of them growing into cancer at a later stage.
Apart form those Esophageal Cancer Prevention methods mentioned above, there are many others that are still being studied in clinical trials and with time could present better and more effective ways to stop the esophageal cancer before it even starts.
